Big Empty Blue is a sci-fantasy multimedia adventure set in the Big Blue, a vast ocean planet inhabited by unique creatures and cultures – the free Tritonid Dominion, the savage Vulture raid lands, the ever-expanding Iguanid provinces, and the mysterious Deep Ones. Inspired by The Legend of Zelda, Avatar: The Last Airbender, One Piece, and the works of Studio Ghibli, this massive multimedia project features two graphic novels and 15+ DnD 5E resources and zines for 400+ pages of original, human-made content.

About

The Big Blue is a vast ocean world connected to Earth and other planets through a series of broken portals. The Blue is home to many unique sapient races and cultures that evolved from the seas, the skies, the swamps, and the hollow volcanic lands. The Tritonid Dominion is a federation of trade routes controlled by the tritonids, a race of nomadic sea amphibians. In the West, the aggressive Iguanid Empire promises safety and order in exchange for taxes and obedience. In the north, the brutal Vulture clans rule with an iron fist, raiding, pillaging, and trading the spoils of conquest with nearby populations. In the depths of the Blue, the Deep Ones scheme endlessly, studying old technologies and civilizations to keep their intellectual primacy over the other races.

Amid it all lies the mystery of the statue islands, scattered all over the ocean. And the looming threat of the Helix: an ancient, massive artifact roaming around the Blue and destroying everything in its path.

A Sea of Adventures

The 5E resources set in the Big Empty Blue are packed with hundreds of different player options.

New Playable Species

Dive deep into a vast oceanic world where sapient species struggle for survival, power, and control across the endless tides.

Explore the oceans as a Tritonid, nomadic merfolk who ride the currents with resilience and tradition. Wield cunning diplomacy and advanced technology as an Iguanid, citizens of the influential Cerulean Empire. Dominate the skies and plunder the seas as a Vulture, fierce birdfolk of the raidlands. Adapt and thrive as a versatile Human, a species of primatefolk from a distant world. Gather knowledge and enforce imperial rule as a Korbak, devoted catfolk from a dying planet. Embrace the chaotic power of Change as a Reef Devil, the irradiated, haughty merrows of the Spires.

New Subclasses

Fight the almighty leviathans with one of the setting’s subclasses inspired by eldritch magic and advanced tech.  Embrace the divine boon of chaos with the Divine Dominion of Change (in “Witches of the Sea”).

Blur the line between dream and reality with the Otherworldly Patron: The One Who Dreams (in Aryel’s Final Curse – Subclasses and Spells). Or pledge your life to the purge of eldritch beings with the Oath of the Sacred Hunt (in Aryel’s Final Curse – Subclasses and Spells).

Friends and Foes

The Big Blue is a vibrant world where the eldritch and the wholesome intertwine. Navigate the intricate hierarchy of tritonid factions and explore a plethora of deep and complex NPCs. Bask in the cuteness and magnificence of the local fauna, but beware of the eldritch nightmares and technological aberrations below.

Magic Artifacts and Builder Tech

Arm yourself and challenge the foes of the Big Blue.

Embrace tritonid spirituality with Change-fueled artifacts like Kalani’s Stone Paddle and the Reef Ancestors’ Mask, or wield ancient Builder technology like Leviathan Caller and the Orb of Tides.

The Comic Series

The comic series follows Sophia and Quill, a teenage human and a young Tritonid, on a journey to discover the mysteries of the statue island of Odir and its inhabitants – a voyage riddled with revelations, ancient secrets, and dark, hungry omens.

The Characters

Sophia

Sophia has the spirit of a true hero. Born in Santa Cruz, California, into a mixed family of African American and Greek descent, Sophia sees herself as a modern-day fighter, yearning to become a hardcore biologist/ecoactivist.

Catapulted into the Big Blue by an unstable Builder portal and stranded in the waters near Odir, Sophia is looking for her missing father in the busy streets of the statue island, unaware of the inscrutable plans that an ancient, hidden deity has laid down for her. She listens to music non-stop, and her favourite genres are rock, metal, and hip-hop. In secret, she adores her mother's Motown, R'n'B, and jazz records.

Oh, and she might be a warlock, but she doesn't know yet...

Quill

Quilaztli Ytzà (aka Quill) belongs to the Tritonid clans, a race of nomadic amphibious creatures that inhabit the sea network known as the Tritonid Dominions. She's a starry-eyed optimist with a swift hand and a heart of gold.

Always swimming in the waters near the port of Odir, Quill is forever eager to hear new stories from pirates, sailors, and travelling merchants - and learn about their roguish (and sometimes arcane) arts.

Uma

Uma is a shaman of the Circle of the Reclaimer and a representative of the Odirian senate. Originally from Terra, Uma is one of the Dominion's leading experts in Builder technology and leads the statue island's only Builder tech lab, the Astral Observatory.

After many years of working on ancient technology, Uma's body has developed a natural attunement with an ancient form of energy: Change. Due to this transformation, she can now harness the power of Change and alter the very fabric of reality - for a price.

Nirikit

Yarr har, fiddle dee dee. Nirikit is a retired privateer and one of the worst scallywags the Big Blue has ever seen. Very little is known of her past until she finished admiral school in the Cerulean Empire and became the best privateer in the Imperial Navy.

After decades of work under the Empress’ order, Nirikit and her fleet mutinied to Odir, becoming Odir’s official new fleet. Recently elected port quartermaster, Nirikit is a mystery to most. Odirian saviour? Imperial spy? Heartless, cynical pirate? Only old Nirikit knows...

Konrad

Konrad is Uma's faithful apprentice, a Vulture mechanic with incredible strength and a knack for Builder engineering. Konrad suffers from an uncommon disease that makes his bones super dense and does not allow him to fly long distances. For this reason, Konrad was discarded into the sea by his original clan and rescued by an Ikarian ship.

Despite all the rescuers' efforts, young Konrad lost his left leg and grew up building and wearing his own prosthetics. Now, he lives in Odir, learning everything he can from one of the best living experts in Builder and Terran tech in the Dominion, hoping to bring this knowledge to the Ikarian cause.
